CREATING LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
ROOTED IN EVERYDAY MAGIC

A nature-based home program designed for children to engage in the world around them

At Laura’s Nature School, I believe nature-based education connects awareness of self, family, community, and nature through empathy and understanding.

Laura’s Learn and Play Nature School LLC has been meeting children's nature and play-based educational needs for over 25 years. My goal is to allow children to be who they are, develop a love of nature, and find joy in learning.  Once children enjoy the pursuit of knowledge, they become lifelong learners.  Early childhood should be joyful, full of wonder, and flow at a slower pace than everything else that follows.  I advocate for letting children play outdoors and encourage them as they grow to achieve the fullest development of their creative, intellectual, and social potential.

Research shows that children excel when they can imagine and create in a supportive, nurturing environment free from unrealistic expectations, frequent transitions, and extremely firm schedules.

Early childhood should be magical, with plenty of space for dreaming. Young children develop self-awareness naturally when they believe in themselves. Magic occurs when children are allowed to make decisions, share ideas, and gently learn from challenges. They will thrive from understanding boundaries and freely expressing their emotions in a safe and validating environment that supports a healthy sense of self.

When children feel safe and respected, they will take risks, ask questions, trust, and learn to express their feelings properly to others.

This scaffolding of achievements is how children build confidence in themselves and their abilities and show the same compassion toward others.

An inclusive environment is formed with a foundation in understanding self, empathy for others, respect for the world, and love of all living things.

To maintain the integrity of a nature, play-based educational philosophy, I do not offer the rigorous academic structure required by the state's Universal Pre-K program.

My journey began when I discovered my love of early education and opened my first early learning program in Longmont. I went to school and received my Associate’s Degree and Director Certificate in Early Childhood Education. I utilized what I learned to transition my program to the play-based, Reggio Emilia nature school I have today.

My goals are to create inspiration for a love of the natural world, support a positive sense of self, and for children to recognize their gifts as an important part of a broader but inclusive community.
